We all know of the mother’s day holiday that is celebrated all around the world to honor our hardworking and loving mothers. The holiday is normally celebrated in the months of March or May. However, only a few people know of the history of this significant holiday. We have decided to present a short insight into this history to our dear readers.
The mother’s day holiday as we know it today began in the United States of America by the efforts of a woman known as Anna Jarvis in the early 20th century. The first mother’s day holiday was celebrated in 1907 when Anna Jarvis held a memorial service for her own mother who had died two years earlier in 1905.
An initial proposal for mother’s day to be made an official holiday was rejected in the year 1908 by the American congress. It was finally made into a holiday by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914.
There were a lot of criticisms after the holiday became too commercialized in the years that followed as it gained popularity all over the world. This was an act that the founder herself even regretted as she believed that all letters written to mothers on that day had to be handwritten to convey love and not with the use of printed cards that are made by companies.
Happy mother’s day from all of us at Philsmedia Entertainment to all our women out there. Keep doing wonders and keep inspiring us.
